VW to launch a compact roadster

According to the well informed spies at Auto Express, popular German car-makers Volkswagen are set to launch a baby roadster.

Impressing crowds at the 2009 Detroit Motor Show, the BlueSport concept car is to become reality and could go into production later this year. With a diesel engine, this 2-seater sports car will surely woo VW fans to sell a car for cash to put towards this efficient yet high performance model.

Looks-wise the roadster will resemble a Scirocco at the front end, with the addition of Audi-esque daytime running LED lights below the headlamps. Reportedly, the car will be more compact than the ever-popular Golf and Scirocco and will instead have a lower more muscular outline.

Powered with a 2 litre, 178 bhp engine, Auto Express reports a six speed gearbox will come as standard. With such statistics, the as yet un-named roadster could reach 0-60 mph in around six seconds, achieving a top speed of 140mph according to Auto Week. Impressive given the car could have a price tag of around £20,000.

To please eco-minded car buyers, the roadster is expected to achieve 48 mpg and be in the sub 120 kg/CO2 category - these figures suggest that the German model could rival the rumoured hybrid MR2 from Toyota or the CR-Z from fellow Japanese car manufacturer Honda.
