UK car production jumps more than 50 per cent in May

New figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) revealed that car production in the UK rose by 54 per cent in May.

A total of 104,365 cars were produced in May this year, which was up 62.6 per cent over the year to date, according to the SMMT. Output levels of commercial vehicles also increased by a massive 129 per cent to 10,745.

Engine production in the UK also rose, growing by 35.9 per cent in May and by 40 per cent over the year to date.

The strength of the new figures show just how far the recovery of production in the industry has come, when compared with the same period last year. Some car makers such as Honda were forced to suspend production for four months after a fall in car sales, production was resumed in June 2009.

"The recovery in U.K vehicle and engine production continued for the seventh consecutive month, with commercial vehicle out more than doubling against a weak 2009," Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT told the Daily Telegraph.

Whilst the recovery of the industry is great news for car buyers and car salesman alike, industry experts admit that there are still some challenges to be faced.

Mr Everitt was cited as saying: "There is concern that fiscal consolidation across Europe may impact demand in the months ahead. It is important that next week's Budget helps to sustain consumer and business confidence as well as encouraging UK investment in new technology and advanced skills."
