Saab to produce supermini?

Motoring publication Auto Express has revealed plans from Swedish car manufacturer Saab to produce a rival to BMW's mini.

In a move to excite car buyers, the publication has released pictures of how the supermini concept could look, as well as citing Saab's plans for a new sportscar, both apparently inspired by the Aero X concepts.

These plans are reportedly a bid by new owner Victor Muller of Spyker Cars, to shake-up the current model range that Saab offer, which some commentators have dubbed as tired or dull.

Auto Express cite Muller as saying that he has already drawn up his own plans for a ''dream supermini'', which will eventually become a successor to the 9-2.

Such news has raised anticipation amongst fans of the classic brand, with enthusiasts on the AutoCar forum, calling for the supermini to be put into production soon.

The new supercar is reported to be even more daring, with Muller stating that it could be built on the same chassis as Spyker's powerful, 187mph C8 Aileron model. Raising hope for those in the UK car industry, it is also anticipated that any new Saab models would be likely to be produced at Saab's brand new factory in Coventry.

Muller is hopeful that the new direction of the firm will be a positive move for Saab, saying ''The most wonderful thing is that we are now in charge of our own destiny. We have a fantastic opportunity.''
