Radio 2 DJ buys Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car

Chris Evans has bought the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car.

The Radio 2 DJ, who already owns an impressive collection of classic cars, bought the famous vehicle for nearly £500,000 from a friend.

Evans jumped at the chance to buy the vehicle once his pal realised that the 17ft car wouldn't fit in his garage. The DJ reportedly paid the same amount for the car that his friend had paid at a Los Angeles auction last May.

In an interview with The Daily Mirror, he said: "Chitty is now officially part of the Berkshire Automotive Massive. She is indeed Truly Scrumptious. She's also gone into the workshop for some much-needed road legalisation."

Evans may feel he has snapped a bargain. There is normally a huge wave of interest when owners of famous vehicles announce 'I am going to sell my car!' Chitty was expected to fetch between £600,000 and £1.2 million at last May's Los Angeles auction.

The car was one of eight vehicles used in the 1968 film, although it is the only one which works. It has spent over 30 years driving in charity races across the UK.

MSN.com report that Michael Jackson once unsuccessfully tried attempted to purchase the car for his Neverland ranch.
