Porsche set to announce production of 918 Spyder

Luxury sports car manufacturer Porsche seem poised to announce that the Porsche 918 Spyder is to go into production.

Porsche unveiled their 918 Spyder at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, with the hybrid electric concept seen as a potential successor to the Carrera GT.

The 918 was not originally planned for production, but as The Telegraph highlighted earlier this week, Porsche's head of development has not entirely ruled out the possibility.

Wolfgang Duerheimer indicated back in April that the company would consider producing the 918 supercar if 1,000 customers showed an interest in buying one. According to Bloomberg, at least 2,000 people have already put in "non-binding expressions of interest", which suggests that an official announcement from Porsche regarding production may be just around the corner.

The 918 Spyder can do 0-62mph in just 3.2 seconds and can hit top speeds of 200mph. To put 918 Spyder's power into context, Top Gear write that the hybrid can lap the Nürburgring in less than 8 minutes, which is faster than the Carrera GT.

The hybrid has four different driving modes to give drivers a range of economy/performance balances. As The Telegraph explain, 'Eco' mode runs entirely on electrical motors with a battery range of 16 miles, while the 'Hybrid' setting uses a combination of fuel and electricity. 'Sport' does a similar job but with a focus on speed, whereas 'Race' is all about performance.

If you're thinking something along the lines of "I'm going to sell my Aston Martin and get one of these", you may have to keep saving for just a little while longer; Bloomberg suspect the hybrid supercar will set buyers back around $630,000 (£410,000).
