One third of UK drivers never check oil levels, says study
According to a report by WhatCar? 28 per cent of UK drivers never check their oil, despite owning their vehicle for an extended period of time.
The study was compiled by analysing oil levels on 250 cars in different locations around the UK, finding that almost 50 per cent of surveyed cars were either low or extremely low on oil.
Asking motorists how often they checked their oil, WhatCar? found that only half of drivers check their oil at regular intervals of one month, with a third of drivers admitting that they never check their levels.
This news comes as a worry for used car buyers who want to be assured that a prospective car's oil levels are at a safe level. As well as completing an HPI check, buyers are advised to throughly study the car or take someone knowledgeable along who can identify any mechanical issues.
According to the survey, approximately 15 million vehicles on the UK's roads could be dangerously low on oil, leaving them open to serious or fatal engine damage.
With National Oil Check Week commencing today, car owners are advised to check their levels to prevent repair bills in excess of £1500 - the amount it could cost for a new engine.
