MG unveils supermini plans

Car manufacturer MG is set to produce a new supermini known as the Zero, in a bid to rival attempts from the likes of Saab who are also considering manufacturing a smaller model.

Unveiled at the Beijing motorshow, the Zero is a small hatchback to entice Ford Fiesta and VW Polo car buyers. The model was developed and produced here in the UK, with Auto Express reporting that the Zero represents the shift in MG policy from sportscars to more family orientated vehicles.

Since the Chinese firm SAIC bought the firm, MG has moved from its roots to planning to produce a range of family cars. Nevertheless, as SellCar-UK.com reported earlier this week, the organisation will be producing a revamped version of their ever popular MG TF roadster, in keeping with company tradition.

The Zero is rumoured to cost around £15,000 and is expected to be launched in the UK next summer. Under the bonnet, the Zero will be powered by a 1.8 litre engine, surely trumping the likes of other superminis in its class.

Looking inside the car, MG say that the Zero will contain a variety of cutting edge technology, including a floating dashboard design and a series of bold colours.

Other plans for MG include an electric city model, based on the 1980's classic Metro and another family car dubbed the MG 6 - exciting times for a company whose future was so unsure in 2005.
