Mel Gibson crashes luxury sports car

Hollywood actor Mel Gibson faces a hefty bill to repair his luxury sports car after being involved in a crash on Sunday.

The Braveheart actor was driving on a tricky stretch of California road on Sunday evening when he smashed his 2008 Maserati Quattroporte into a rocky hillside. Gibson was unhurt in the crash, but Mail Online report that he may have to shell out a 'five-figure' sum to fix the damage.

Photos taken after the crash show the front right-hand of the car bent into the tyre, which Mail Online suspect may have come off the axle. If Gibson had been thinking "it's time for me to sell my car" before the crash, he may no longer have the chance. If reports in The Mirror to be believed, the damage is beyond repair.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) did not suspect Gibson of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, but they did ask the star if he had been on his mobile phone when the crash occurred.

Leland Tang, Public Information Officer for the CHP, told celebrity magazine TMZ that Gibson recalls little of the accident. "Gibson told officers in the field he did not know how the car drifted out of the lane and into the hillside," Tang said.

"Mr Gibson supplied all the pertinent information to the officers at the scene, gave a statement and received a ride home from a friend," he added.
