Jaguar set to launch blast-proof XJ Sentinel

Luxury carmaker Jaguar will unveil its heavily-armoured new XJ sentinel at the Moscow Motor Show next week, according to various reports.

ABC News say that the new Jaguar XJ Sentinel will feature a high-strength armoured inner cell, made from ultra-tough, Kevlar-backed steels. The car will offer both ballistic and blast protection, as well as an underfloor system to protect against grenade attacks.

According to Autocar, the new Sentinel uses a long-wheelbase version of the XJ chassis, with power coming from a 380bhp, 5.0-litre direct-injection V8 petrol engine. It is thought that the 'armoured limo' can hit top speeds of 121mph, with a 0-62mph time of 9.7 seconds.

The Sentinel will come with a three-year, 50,000-mile warranty, say What Car. The official launch will take place at the Moscow International Motor Show, which kicks off next week.

With the bullet and blastproof new Sential, Jaguar seem to be targeting government officials and individuals with specialist security needs, such as high-profile celebrities. Pricing details have not yet been revealed, but buyers thinking "I want to sell my Aston Martin for one of those" should expect to pay at least £100,000.

"The XJ Sentinel was designed and developed in partnership with industry leaders, and incorporates the very latest armoured vehicle systems to deliver extremely impressive levels of protection, while maintaining a very discreet appearance,'' Jaguar MD Mike O’Driscoll said in a statement.

"It offers governments, security organisations and private individuals the highest level of security, with advanced design, refined performance and a beautifully-crafted cabin," he added.
