Honda Civic Type R cancelled

Fans of the hot hatch will be sad to hear that the high-performance Honda Civic Type R is to be axed, as its emissions don't comply with upcoming strict European standards.

From December, sales of the 197bhp 2 litre VTEC-powered car will cease, meaning the car will only be available to used car buyers. Rather than deciding to revamp the sizzling model, Honda have chosen to scrap it in favour of developing other offerings.

Perhaps a move to Australia or South Africa is in order for hot-hatch enthusiasts as these markets will continue to sell the Type R, free from the watchful eye of the EU.

According to Auto Express, around 12,000 Civic Type R's have been sold in the UK since January 2007, competing against the likes of the Focus ST, Astra VXR and class leader, the VW Golf GTI.

To commiserate the end of an era, Honda owners club members will be able to take their cars around the Silverstone track for a final lap of honour on August 22nd.

For buyers hoping to get their hands on a Type R there is some good news - the list price has been dropped to £19,495, with Top Gear anticipating that even better deals can be done.
