Four cars awarded five-star Euro NCAP rating

Four cars have been awarded maximum five-star Euro NCAP safety ratings, according to crash test results published yesterday.

The Citroen C4, Honda CR-Z, Hyundai ix35 and Suzuki Swift all achieved the highest possible score in the latest round of Euro NCAP safety tests.

The news will no doubt be of interest to potential new car buyers. Safety is now one of the most important considerations for choosing a new car, and drivers in a five-star rated vehicle can be sure to receive the best possible protection in the event of a crash.

In a press release, Euro NCAP commented that cars like the hybrid CR-Z prove that manufacturers can build models that focus on both fuel efficiency and safety, without compromising on either aspect.

"The Honda CR-Z demonstrates that good all round safety needs not be compromised by a fuel efficient petrol-electric powertrain," Euro NCAP said.

Euro NCAP also noted that its Electronic Stability Control (ESC) demands have led to a more widespread use of the systems in new vehicles across Europe. Three of the four models tested had ESC fitted as standard, with the C4 being the only exception.

"The results show that manufacturers are rising to the challenge of Euro NCAP's new rating system and are continuing to make safety a priority," Euro NCAP said in their statement.

The safety organisation also gave details of new testing procedures set to come into force later this year. It is hoped that 'Euro NCAP Advanced' will offer buyers an even better understanding of vehicle safety specifications.

"I am looking forward to the launch of Euro NCAP advanced. The new assessments will broaden the scope of our safety assessments and will greatly enhance the information we are able to provide consumers," Euro NCAP’s Secretary General, Michiel van Ratingen, said in the organisation's press release.
