'A bit of elbow grease' boosts resale value, experts claim
Motorists looking to sell a car for cash can add value to their vehicle by spending a bit of time and money on cleaning it up, according to a Daily Telegraph columnist.
Owners who sell their cars privately often find that local newspapers and used car magazines are full of similar vehicles, but journalist David Williams says that 'a bit of elbow grease' can really make a car stand out from the crowd.
When a homeowner looks to sell their property and maximise its value, they usually pull out all the stops to make it look and feel as attractive as possible.
Williams says that the same attitude should be taken when selling a car, as well-presented vehicles almost invariably fetch more money than ones that are dirty or covered in unsightly scratches.
One industry expert interviewed by Williams claims that buy spending just £30 on cleaning equipment and with just a few hours' hard work, sellers can easily add £200 to their car's value.
"Spend a bit more and get a professional in, and you're talking about up to £1,000 of added value, depending on the original condition of the car," Halfords' product manager Karen Quinn told Williams.
While it is important to make a car look as good as possible before attempting a sale, sellers should not break the bank as used car buyers are usually prepared for the odd imperfection.
Paul Normyle, who runs a car valeting company, told Williams: "Don't spend more than £250 tidying the average car."
"What any buyer wants to see is something that looks as though it's been cared for, but he's not expecting imperfection," he added.
