10,000th VW Scirocco built
Two years after its initial launch, the new Scirocco has reached a production figure of 10,000, marking the successful re-introduction of the iconic coupe.
Holding a small party, the Portuguese plant where the car is manufactured declared the Scirocco as ''one of the most important cars that produce.''
According to Auto Express, the 10,000th model is the barnstorming Scirocco R, decked out in Rising Blue paint, complete with intake openings in the front bumper, black diffuser and chrome tailpipes. With 261 bhp on offer from its 2 litre turbo charged engine, this landmark model is by no means average.
The original Scirocco was produced by VW from 1974 to 1992 and was built to replace the Karmann Ghia coupe. By 1992, the Scirocco was replaced by the more upmarket and performance-orientated Corrado which continued VW's sports coupe arm until 1995.
In 2006, VW launched a concept car called the IROC at the Paris Motor Show, exciting car buyers who put two-and-two together with the concept name as the middle four letters of 'Scirocco'. By 2009 the production car was launched, proving a big success with buyers across Europe.
The original Scirocco reached sales figures of 800,000 units and VW will certainly be hoping that the new coupe will surpass these figures.
