Car Round-Up: VW Scirocco
posted on: July 6th, 2009
The year is 1974. Harold Wilson is Prime Minister. Miner strikes force the government to ration electricity and impose a 3-day working week. Rubbish piles up as bin men refuse to work. Abba win the Eurovision song contest in Brighton.Oh, and VW releases the Scirocco – a car that captures the imagination of thousands of bored young men across Europe. A car that's destined become a minor cult classic.
Now, 35 years later, the third generation of Sciroccos has hit the streets. VW fans and ageing petrolheads will be very pleased indeed.
Golf over par
The Scirocco is based around the eternally popular Golf GTI.
In fact, at first glance it looks a little like a GTI crouched and ready to pounce. Either that or a GTI that's met with an unfortunate squashing accident. That's not to say it's an ugly car - far from it. The lines and angles have a distinct sexiness and sense of fun rare in a VW. Its pointed, insectoid front end looks born to zip across clear, wide country roads.
The low height does make it a bit of a squeeze for the taller driver, but it also gives you the thrilling feeling of getting closer to the ground and the engine.
After all, this is a car that's designed to be driven and enjoyed. It's not really one for passenger comfort (just try getting into the back seat). The boot can't fit much more than a rucksack, but then who buys a Scirocco to cram the family in and take a long haul trip to the Hebrides?
Rocking the 'Rocco
At higher speeds the low position does tend to make things a little noisy, but otherwise the Scirocco is a very comfortable drive. Adjustable suspension and adaptive dampers help smooth things out.
The standard model gives you a 200bhp 2.0 turbo engine, offering 0-62mph in 7.2 seconds. Fast, yes – though not particularly mind blowing. However, it handles brilliantly – with responsive grip and steering that really connects you with the car.
As an added bonus, the Scirocco's slightly lower emissions mean that it even falls in a lower tax band to its cousin the GTI. This can only be a good thing when it comes to holding value for resale (in fact, we're seeing high demand for Sciroccos, including people calling to ask “will you buy my car” and getting pleasantly surprised at the quotes we offer!)
