Car Round-Up: Renault Megane Coupé

Remember those “shaking that ass” Renault Megane adverts from 2003?

Well, if Megane sales that year are anything to go by, it seems that the average UK buyer is not a fan of the larger-rumped vehicle.

After those disappointing results, Renault have decided that instead of offering a conservative 3-door Megane, they'll produce a sportier coupé model. Cynics may say that calling it a coupé is just a way to charge more money for a similar product – but really it's a much slicker machine than we're accustomed to with standard 3-doors.

And frankly, it looks very nice indeed.

While the Megane appeared a little awkward, its coupé cousin looks fast, sharp and sleek. It's a full 48mm lower, has sloping lines, sparkling alloys and no-nonsense silver front vents. It's all definitively coupé.

The general consensus seems to be that this is Renault's answer to the popular VW Scirocco. It's also the forerunner (based around much of the same engine technology) to the beefier RenaultSport Megane, out late 2009.

Will it give the VW a run for its money?

The slightly less cushioned suspension makes the Megane Coupé a bit more of a rigid, stiff ride compared to the Scirocco. Then again, the entry level models are a fair bit cheaper than the VW.

The interior is well-made, with a few nice design touches. There's a deceptively large amount of space in the boot and overall the cabin feels tight, but comfortable.

The higher-end models (with 178bhp turbocharged 2-litre engines) will take you from 0-62mph in a very respectable 7.8 seconds. Not as fast as the top-line Sciroccos, but faster than the lower end versions.

Does it have the pedigree and cache of the Scirocco? Probably not. Does it offer a similar driving experience for a lower price – generally yes. Which is clearly a big plus point for Renault.
