Best value car 2008?

posted on: January 21st, 2009
No matter what the state of the economy, most people want their new cars to depreciate as little as possible after purchase. Toyota Aygo owners may be rather heartened by the news therefore that their car has topped a list of the best value cars in 2008.

A report on www.am-online.com states that the Aygo beat the likes of perennial favourites the Mini and the Smart Car for the top spot. The statistics come from Parker's Guide.

Their statistics compared new prices in Jan '08 to average used prices for models sold 12 months later. At the top of the pile, the Aygo is estimated to have lost just over £1500 in the past twelve months. This is hardly a flash in the pan for the Aygo though, which came top in 2006 and took 8th place last year.

Somewhat remarkably in these troubled times, the combined expected loss of the top ten vehicles is actually less that the equivalent list in 2007.

Small is beautiful

While everything at the moment seems to relate back to the dire economy, it's worth noting that ALL of the top ten this year are smaller vehicles.

Despite the rapid recent decrease in oil prices, buyers are still looking for fuel economy and efficiency. They're also keen to find cars that hold their value better over a longer period (for when they're ready to sell used car). As we reported in previous blog posts, smaller cars are holding their value in the 2nd hand market place better than most.

Other cars which made the top ten for value include the Citroen C1, Fiat 500, Peugeot 107, Mitsubishi I and Perodua Kelisa.

Meanwhile, at the luxury end, the figures are quite staggering. If you bought a Mercedes SL Class AMG in January '08, for example, you can expect its value to have decreased by around £57,580 already.

Buyers of Maybach 62s (who, let's face it, must have had a fair amount to begin with) will have lost an incredible £128,899 over the last year.
