Car Round-Up: BMW Z4 2009

The unveiling of the second generation Z4 at a Detroit auto show last December caused a mini tidal wave of excitement. Now officially released (at a rather bad time for luxury vehicles it has to be said) the new Z4 does make quite a splash.

Gone is the choice between soft-top and coupé – the 2009 Z4 has a hard retractable roof. While this might annoy coupé and convertible purists, for most people this is an improvement.

(Even if you're an open-top-sceptic, you'll probably be impressed by the mere 20 seconds it takes the automatic roof to fully close.)

The Z4 is sporty without being wild, sleek without being too flash and fast without quite being mind-blowing. All very BMW, you might say. But, for the style and price there aren't many sexier machines out there today.

The look is a cross between classic sports car and the somewhat divisive appearance of the previous Z4. Lovers of the predecessor's unique tail won't be disappointed. However the fairly conventional overall shape is unlikely to polarise opinion like the 2002 model did.

The top of the range model feels like a serious sports car. In fact, the entire range sound gutsy and run nicely, as you'd expect from a 6-cylinder BMW. Okay, so there may be smoother rides out there (particularly at low speeds), but the Z4 has an element of raw excitement that a lot of its counterparts don't have.

Even the lowest level model gets from 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds, while the top end sDrive35i offers a rather thrilling 5.1 seconds (though it is almost £7,000 more expensive than the 23i – more if you add any of the myriad extras).

Base level Z4s start with 215hp, rising to 300hp in the 35i. You can also choose six speed manual or automatic in the mid-range model, as well as seven speed dual clutch transmission at the top of the range.

It's slightly more spacious than the first generation (around 6 inches longer in total). This makes more room for passenger and driver. The dash is appealingly sparse (the Z4 is the first BMW roadster with the iDrive control system installed) and there's an electronic handbrake.

Overall, it's a beautiful machine that will doubtless make BMW aficionados very happy indeed. Of course, if you've got an Z4 to sell (or you're thinking “who will buy my car” for any model), why not give us a call at Sell Car UK!
