Used car dealerships facing scrutiny?

Used car sellers hover somewhere between estate agents and politicians when it comes to public trust. (Though they're currently a long way above politicians!)

But we've been watching with interest the story that the Office of Fair Trading is planning to look in detail at the industry. It follows the news in January that second hand car dealers were the reason for the largest number of complaints to Consumer Direct.

Apparently, there were 68,000 complaints about bought second-hand cars in 2008. The majority from people who had bought them from forecourt dealerships.

As a result, the OFT plans to carry out a full enquiry into the reasons why the industry attracts such a large amount of complaints. It may even lead to changed legislation somewhere down the line to protect consumers further.

In fact, if you've got some useful information to share with the OFT, you can email them at: second-handcars@oft.gsi.gov.uk

Currently, the Retail Motor Industry Federation recommends that you visit a garage that can show they're a member of the RMIF. That way you've got more options for getting help should you have any problems.

At Sell Car we're all for anything that improves any part of the car industry.

We specialise in buying premium vehicles – but we know which dealers we can trust when it comes to moving them on. As in every industry, some are fantastic, some are frankly dubious. We're also keenly aware that treating our customers well results in repeat business and recommendations – something you'd think that some dealerships would cotton on to.

To be honest, we can testify to the poor level of trust in forecourt dealerships out there. Many of our customers are keen to sell to someone other than their local dealers because they just don't trust them!

We're expecting to hear what the OFT's findings are by the end of 2009.

As always – if you're thinking “I need to sell my car quickly, safely and easily” check out Sell Car UK!
