Car Round-Up: Audi Q5
Audi aren't exactly known for their brilliance in the SUV market. Their only previous effort to date was the frankly disappointing Q7 back in 2006. Things did not, therefore, bode too well for the Audi Q5.
However, it has to be said that the Q5 is an impressive beast. And, while SUVs struggle to sell at forecourts across the country, we're still seeing demand for quality vehicles such as this one from user car buyers.
The main thing going for the Audi Q5 is that it provides a touch of excellence in a generally pretty average car class. Most SUVs are clunky, unsubtle things that don't do finesse. The Q5, on the other hand, handles well, gets up to 60mph in a semi-respectable 9.5 seconds, and has nicely weighted steering.
The cabin is light, roomy and allows for good all-round visibility. There is also plenty of space in the back, as well as a generous amount of headroom.
The Q5 does have the unmistakeable trendiness of an Audi – both inside and out. Whether that's a good or bad thing generally depends on your opinion of Audi, but we like the sleek lines and clean, no-nonsense interior.
It also manages to at least go some way towards addressing an increasingly significant problem with SUVs – their carbon emissions. The Q5's emissions run at 175g/km (at present the average is around 163g/km). It's still an expensive car to run when compared to other smaller, more efficient types of vehicle, and it also lands in some higher tax bands. The other thing to note is that residual values for less boxy, more city-friendly SUV models such as the Q5 have taken less of a hammering than their beefier counterparts.
Overall, the Q5 is a very good family-friendly SUV. Of course, if you're genuinely looking to put the Q5 through its paces off-road, then you might be better suited to the robust Freelander.
